Hand crafted by sculptor
Ryan Johnson James

Hand sculpted, unique commissions by Ryan Johnson James.

Ryan Johnson James graduated from Plymouth University with a degree in fine art. Since then he has worked both as a sculptor and stonemason around numerous parts of the UK and has now settled in Yorkshire.

Ryan’s work is inspired and influenced by our rich history, industry and the natural environment. He is passionate about traditional crafts and likes to keep this tradition alive by teaching others how to carve using traditional methods.

Ryan has an ever-growing consciousness of the environment around him and tries to work with reclaimed stone or stone local to the area in which he is working. Alongside stone, Ryan also sculpts using clay. He often uses clay and plaster to teach young budding artists traditional techniques which can then be applied to stone.

Alongside his sculptures and carvings, Ryan has worked as the head stonemason and site managed a number of large-scale barn conversions, including a finalist for grand designs. With his knowledge of building, stonemasonry and the arts, he is capable of creating unique sculptures which may standalone but can also be integrated into construction projects.

Ryan produces bespoke stone work and sculptures, working mainly on a commission basis. He is community focused and enjoys creating works which are inspired by and influenced by the community. In a recent commission for Kirklees Council, Ryan worked with a local school and local people to create a 4m high obelisk representative of the village in which it is situated.

Alongside commissions, Ryan hosts educational and community workshops. He also enjoys exhibiting at art fayres around Yorkshire.
